Learning and Development

Hello and welcome to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay from everyone in the Learning & Organisational Development Team.

We hope your first day and first few weeks in your new job go well for you. We appreciate that it can be daunting joining a new organisation, there are so many new faces and things to learn. It can be hard to know who to contact for information and what is expected of you. To help make this easier for you, we’ve created this page to give you some key information and signposting around your learning and development needs whilst working at UHMB.

Core Skills

This refers to the NHS Core Skills Framework, it may be more familiar to you as what was mandatory training. All staff must complete the core skills training appropriate for their role. This will be fully resourced by the Trust.

This refers to training which is specific to your role i.e. Advanced Life Support or working in confined spaces training (not everyone in the Trust will need to do this training). These have been identified within each Care Group with arrangements in place to review these on an ongoing basis to ensure the activities are appropriate for the identified roles.

It would also include training as part of your continued professional development I.e. venepuncture or minute taking skills. This also will be fully resourced by the Trust.

Personal and Career Development

This would be development or training which you have a particular interest in or maybe an aspiration to do but is not needed for your current role. This may be supported by the Trust depending on other commitments/restrictions and would be considered whether any reasonable adjustment could be made.

Discussions around these opportunities should be part of your appraisal or regular review/catch up meetings. Support offered may be a mix of Trust and individual contribution (time and funding).

Funding

We know that you may be looking to continue your development and want to access funding. There are a range of external sources available. A good starting point is your professional body / union (should you be a member of one) as they quite often have grants / bursaries / funding available for their members to apply for. Colleagues have also developed an intranet page which is constantly updated with details of different organisations offering funding. This includes details and links to the relevant websites. Many have criteria attached, however this is very wide and varied, so is worth having a good look through on a regular basis. To find this page, load the intranet (also known as MS SharePoint) and search for ‘funding’. The page will then come up for you.

Additional information can also be found on the Learning and OD intranet pages by going to the People and OD site (dropdown box on the top left of the page) then go to the big Learning and Organisational Development button on the right.

Your Induction

It’s more than courses...

How we develop and learn is so much more than attending a course. When thinking about what support and development you may need in your role consider the below options:

  • Managing a project
  • Doing some research
  • Mentoring other staff
  • E-learning
  • Job swaps
  • Undertaking an audit
  • Shadowing people in other roles / departments (within and external to the Trust)
  • Coaching
  • Discussion groups
  • Secondments
  • Reading books / articles and feeding back to your team
  • Attending Conferences
  • Guided reading
  • On-the-job teaching sessions

Training Management System (TMS)

The Training Management System (TMS) is the Trust's internal system for recording all internal training for staff. It can be accessed from your favourites, the L&OD intranet pages or the desktop icon called “TMS”. From here you will manage all your core skills and job essential training. You will set up your TMS account on your first day at the Trust by logging in for the first time and adding your details. The L&OD team will be notified when you've set up your account, at which point it will be verified and approved.

Once your account has been set up, you will be able to access your TMS from a Trust PC and your personal devices. You will be prompted to update your password the first time you log into a Trust PC. Please also  ensure your IT password is up to date in order to access TMS from home as this can only be updated on a Trust PC -  Access TMS on any device (https://tms.uhmb.nhs.uk)

Just log in the same as if accessing TMS at work using your MBHT email and password

Please note that while the majority of eLearning can be accessed from home, certain courses (e.g. appraisal and care certificate) can only be accessed on a Trust machine.

Further information about how to use TMS will be available when you start via your manager/supervisor, or you can contact tms.admin@mbht.nhs.uk or by phone on 01524 516242.

Key Training contacts

Responsibility for managing training and running courses is devolved down to specialist departments across UHMB e.g. Resuscitation. As a result, who you would need to contact for a training query will depend on the course. To help make it easier for you to know who to contact here are some of the main departments who look after some of the training you will need to do:

  • Learning & OD Team – Leadership Development Programme, Trust Induction Programme, Appraisals, Courageous Conversations, Restorative Practice, Communication Fundamentals of Care, coaching skills etc
  • I3 - IT courses including Lorenzo, Badgernet, EMIS etc
  • Resuscitation – BLS, ALS ILS etc
  • Practice Education Facilitators (PEF’s) - support with clinical placements/supervision for student and internal nurses
  • Health and Safety – manual handling, display screen equipment, IOSH, safer sharps etc
  • Clinical Skills - venepuncture, ANTT, cannulation, clinical observations etc
  • Safeguarding – children and adults safeguarding courses

  • Under and Post Graduate Medical Education - looking after Medical Staff on Training Programmes i.e. FY1’s, ST and CT doctors

All of these departments have pages on the intranet (MS SharePoint) of their own or sections under the Care Group they work in which you will be able to access when you start and have a computer account.
