Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system. UHMBT provide Ophthalmology appointments and treatment at all three of our hospital sites in Kendal, Lancaster and Barrow.

Thanks to hospital and community staff working more closely together, thousands of patients across south Cumbria and north Lancashire who would have previously had to come into hospital for their eye care can now attend appointments at their local opticians. For minor eye conditions, such as red eye, sore eye or visual disturbance, people can be referred to the community service directly by their GP, or make an appointment with the optometrist directly.

The Trust also has Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs) who can provide emotional support, practical advice, impartial information, guidance and advocacy to people of all ages who are affected by sight loss. Family members and carers also receive support from the ECLO’s.
