Oncology

Oncology is the study and treatment of Cancer. Our Oncology service offers oncology outpatients clinics, chemotherapy and immunotherapy delivery and an acute oncology service for a wide range of different cancers.

If you have a rarer form of Cancer such as a primary brain tumour or sarcoma, your care might need to be transferred to specialist centres at the Royal Preston Hospital or The Christie in Manchester.

Our Consultant-led Oncology outpatient clinics run across all three of our hospital sites at Westmorland General Hospital (WGH), Furness General Hospital (FGH) and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI).

Chemotherapy and immunotherapy are delivered at all three of our hospital sites.

  • RLI: Monday – Friday
  • FGH: Monday – Friday
  • WGH: Wednesday – Thursday

Chemotherapy and immunotherapy are delivered as a day case and run by a team of highly experienced and trained chemotherapy nurses.

The acute oncology service is a team of oncologists and nurse practitioners based at both FGH and RLI. The service runs Monday – Friday. A member of the Acute Oncology team will aim to review patients within 24 hours of referral or the next working day.

The Acute Oncology Team see people who

  • Have a complication from their anti-cancer therapy
  • Have a complication arising from their cancer
  • Have an unknown primary cancer

If you suspect you might have cancer, you should make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible. They will be able to refer you to the right service for your needs.
