The Clinical Investigations Unit is a diagnostics department based on all three main hospital sites – Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital, which undertakes 21 different tests across Morecambe Bay. Your appointment could be at any hospital, but some tests only take place in one location. All information will be on your appointment letter.
The team within the Clinical Investigations Unit consists of Cardiac Physiologists, Respiratory Physiologists, Healthcare Science Support Workers and Administrative support.
Cardiac Physiologists are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart disease. Their role responsibilities include setting up equipment, carrying out procedures and recording and analysing the results.
Respiratory physiology and sleep science involves the diagnosis and treatment of lung disease and sleep disorders. This includes routine and highly complex diagnostic tests to assess all aspects of lung function and assess sleep disorders by using a variety of non-invasive sleep measuring systems.
Gold standard for echocardiography
The Clinical Investigations Unit has achieved the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) accreditation for echocardiography. This accreditation ensures that the highest standards are met and maintained for the benefit of patients, and means our highly skilled team are working to gold standards - one of the few centres in the country to have this achievement. Find out more about the accreditation on the BSE website.
