UHMBT's Radiology Services during the COVID-19 pandemic

Posted on: 2 May 2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic the Trust is continuing to work hard to keep our staff and patients safe whilst delivering services. The Trust’s Radiology service is endeavouring to continue to provide services however needs to make some minor operational changes in order to do so. The changes are as follows;

Direct/open access:

Direct/open access for general X-ray remains unchanged with the exception of Ulverston Community Health Centre which is currently closed during the crisis. Patients can access general X-ray at:

  • Queen Victoria Hospital: Monday-Friday, 9am - 12pm and 1.30pm - 4.30pm.
  • RLI: Monday-Friday, 9am - 4pm
  • FGH: Monday-Friday, 7.30am – 7.30pm
  • WGH: Monday, 8.30am-7.45pm and Tuesday - Friday, 8.30am -5pm.

Radiology referrals:

The Radiology service asks that colleagues use Advice and Guidance if they are uncertain of the urgency of the request and feel the advice of a radiologist would assist decision making. The following email address is also available to assist in escalating requests: radiology.administration@mbht.nhs.uk

The team will triage all requests.  Patients with imaging requested as urgent or two-week wait (2WW) imaging will be prioritised.  With the requirements for social distancing and the need to clean equipment between patients, please note that capacity for routine patients may be affected resulting in longer than usual waits.

COVID-19 patients:

If patients are COVID positive or suspected and require imaging, but are not for hospital admission, please call the relevant radiology site listed below in order for radiology to arrange a suitable time for the patient to attend site.

Radiology will arrange for the patient to be imaged in the designated areas on-site with appropriate PPE. Radiology will also make arrangements to provide appropriate PPE to patients upon arrival to site.
