The Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Learning Disabilities team will be hosting an interactive event for people living with a learning disability or autism on Tuesday 20th June.
The ‘Our Health Day’ event will take place at Chorley and South Ribble District Hospital from 10am – 1pm on 20th June in Health Academy 3. Entry to the event is free and refreshments are available from 09.30am. There will be a range of free activities and stalls available on the day and attendees will also have the opportunity to meet the Trust’s therapy dogs Iska and Bentley.
The Our Health Day event has been developed to enable people living with a learning disability or autism to understand the patient journey when attending the outpatients department, coming to the Emergency department or when they’re admitted to a ward in one of the Trust’s hospitals. Many people with a learning disability or autism find it helpful to understand the journey, teams or environment, and this helps them when they attend appointments.
Our Health Day is aimed at informing people about the services and support available across the Trust, so that people know what to expect when they come to hospital and so that health services are more accessible to all.
Several specialist teams will be on hand at the event to answer any questions that people have. Attendees can learn more about their health and support services available. Stalls available on the day will include:
- Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Learning Disability and Autism team
- Patient Experience / Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)
- Audiology
- Special Care Dentistry
- Rosemere Cancer Centre
- Lancashire Eye Hospital
- Dieticians
- Diabetes Nurses
- Occupational Therapy
- Oral care
- Healthy eating service
- The Pet Therapy/ Sensory Dogs
- Physiotherapy – who will hold chair-based exercise sessions
- Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust Harri Bus

The event will be co-delivered with self-advocates with lived experience from We are People First. It will also be supported by local partner organisations including the Lancashire Learning Disability Partnership Board, Healthwatch, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, and the Lancashire Integrated Care Board.
The event, which will take place during Learning Disability Awareness Week (19th – 25th June 2023), promises to be a great event highlighting the support available to people living with a learning disability or autism in Lancashire and South Cumbria.
