Robert Sharkey, Heart Failure Specialist Nurse at UHMBT, wins National Award
Health Care Professionals throughout the UK have been recognised and honoured by patients for their exceptional quality of care and treatment. Sponsored by the Pumping Marvellous Foundation, the six “You’re Simply Marvellous” awards acknowledge the value that these Health Care Professionals bring to the treatment of Heart Failure, improving patient outcomes throughout the UK. Measured by the individual patients’ experience, this award reflects the direct impact these six outstanding Health Care Professionals have in the local community, producing the highest standards of care for their patients.
Robert Sharkey, who is based at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay, has been nominated by the patient community to receive a ‘You’re Simply Marvellous’ award. Heart failure patient’s wife Lynne, commended Robert, saying, “We would like to nominate Rob Sharkey, my husband's heart failure nurse. From the very first visit after my husband's STEMI and heart failure diagnosis, Rob had him on all 4 pillars of heart failure medications. When we took his prescription to the chemist, the pharmacist told us Rob is well known for making sure all his heart failure patients are on the very best treatments. He also kindly shared his number to call him should there be any problems. My husband was a bit worried after having his ICD fitted that, we perhaps wouldn't see Rob as often, but he assured us he would certainly keep up the appointments. He takes his time in explaining things to us both, doesn't rush appointments and he is just an all-around great guy. I think it would be fabulous if he was awarded an award for just knowing so much about HF.”
As the representative of the UK Heart Failure patients’ voice, The Pumping Marvellous Foundation emphasises the importance of the patient perspective in recognising and rewarding Health Care Professionals.
CEO and Founder, Nick Hartshorne – Evans, has recognised Rob Sharkey for their outstanding service to heart failure. “To hear such incredible feedback on how well thought of you are by both a patient and his wife is fantastic, the extra level of care and compassion you have provided to them both is tremendous and shines through and it makes a huge difference to the lives of your patients and their families.”
The Community Heart Failure Team in Barrow-in-Furness wins National Award
The Community Heart Failure Team based at Integrated Community Care Group has been chosen by the Pumping Marvellous Foundation to receive a “Team of the Year Award. This is a special award presented to a team of the CEO’s choosing, who has shown exemplary commitment and excellence to patient support. You were selected after receiving the following nomination by one of your patients from our national patient community.
“I would like to nominate my heart failure nurses Helen Rogers & Abi Webb (Community Heart Failure Team, Integrated Community Care Group, Barrow in Furness, Cumbria) They have been outstanding in their care for me. I feel that they have been a lifeline throughout my journey and have been there for me every step of the way with support & encouragement. I don't think I would have managed this journey without them. They have seen me at my lowest and patiently guided me to the good place where I now find myself. Abi introduced me to Pumping Marvellous and was the 1st person to explain heart failure to me. Aptly Abi was also the last of the team that I saw before being discharged to my GP last month.”
CEO and Founder, Nick Hartshorne – Evans, has recognised the Team for their outstanding service to heart failure. This award is presented each year, at my discretion, in recognition of a clinical team that excels at caring for patients living with heart failure. Who goes above and beyond the normal standard of care with commitment, dedication, and loyalty to heart failure patients.
This is a prestigious award and is highly valued by our patient community. We feel there is no higher accolade than being chosen by patients.
The Marvellous Awards are presented every December by the Pumping Marvellous Foundation, the UK’s heart failure charity. This team award recognises that you consistently surpass what is expected of you as a healthcare professional team and you truly understand the needs of heart failure patients and demonstrate this in your work.
“Congratulations to our worthy winners in this year's Marvellous Awards 2023. Leading by example, you have shown how hope, resilience, and self-awareness can benefit patients with heart failure, and that can be a real challenge at times. Wishing to share and support others is incredible, well done and thank you.” Angela Graves, Chair of Trustees Board, the Pumping Marvellous Foundation.
