Health Trust seeks to appoint new public and staff Governors

2 August 2019

Are you interested in helping to shape the way that University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) runs services through representing members’ and the public’s views on the Trust’s governing body?

If so, why not put yourself forward as a Governor and make that difference.

Nominations are now open for elections to UHMBT’s Council of Governors, with 12 seats up for election.

The Trust has a total of 32 Governors; seven Staff Governors and 17 Public Governors, who are voted for by members of their constituencies as well as and eight Partner Governors, appointed by organisations who work with the Trust.

The Public Governor positions up for election include Barrow and West Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire and South Lakeland and West Cumbria.

There are also Staff Governor vacancies in Community Services and Estates and Facilities.

To be eligible to stand for election, a nominee must be a member of the Trust from the constituency they are standing for and have no prior convictions.

The closing date for nominations is 14 August 2019 and the results will be announced on 25 September 2019.

Ian Johnson, Chairman of UHMBT, said: “Our Governors provide us with an additional layer of scrutiny to ensure that decisions taken by our Executives and the Board result in improved care for patients.

“We want people to take up the challenge to help us drive forward improvements to ensure we continue to make a difference to patients across our area.”

Paul Jones, Company Secretary for the Trust, added: “To be an effective Governor, the key attributes we are looking for are enthusiasm for the role and a passion for doing things better.

“There are no specific skills or knowledge required. All Governors will be given support (learning and development) and Staff Governors will be given time to undertake the role.

“The role will be satisfying and challenging, providing an opportunity to make UHMB a great place to be cared for, a great place to work.”

The Council of Governors has a specific responsibility to represent the interests of members of the Trust and the interests of the public and to hold the Non-Executive Directors to account for the performance of the Board of Directors.
