Demolition work on the old boiler house and 44m high chimney at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) is due to start tomorrow – Tuesday 16 July.

The old boiler house and chimney (which is white with a black top), have been replaced by an award-winning Energy Centre and are therefore no longer needed.

The Trust will start with the removal of the concrete-framed building, which will make way for cranes to dismantle the steel chimney and remove the flues.

There is likely to be some noise from the work which may disturb local residents and colleagues, and we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience. We will, of course, endeavour to keep any noise to a minimum.

We will be using the best plant and dust suppression to effectively manage the work and reduce the impact on our neighbours and colleagues working at the RLI.

The site hours are 8am to 5.30pm and the site is to be serviced from the hospital grounds only. There should be no impact on the surrounding roads and services. However, the works will be visible from the boundary.

The work is likely to take eight weeks, followed by a less intrusive phase, to repair the retained facades. The work to remove the large chimney is weather dependant.

We wish to apologise once again for any inconvenience during this work.
